Open Reduction Internal Fixation...
10 months ago I shattered my heel bone and it was repaired with a titanium plate, screws and bone graft (to fill in the voids)...
Unfortunately I still experience debilitating pain to where I can barely walk without taking prescription level doses of ibuprofen and tylenol (even then it sux)...
and it seems my body doesn't like the titanium (so they may have to go back in and remove the hardware - ack!)...
comments/observations?

Re: ORIF
Tue, March 8, 2005 - 10:02 PMDear Chacmools: Sorry to hear you are having such a rough time. Are they going to replace the plate and screws or just remove them? I am not a medical doc, but it sounds like your body's reaction to the titanium really slowed the healing response. Here are a couple of suggestions you can try:
1) there is nothing better than a strong, broad spectrum, pulsed electromagnetic field to help with the healig process. THE machine of choice, and the only one I'd trust, is the PAP-IMI (now in clinical trials for pain, inflammation and loss of range of motion - all problems you probably have). www.wellnesswithin.com should have a listing of PAP-IMI sites. Trust me, I used this on my broken leg and the results were amazing!
2) Your body needs the right nutrition to heal. Beyond the usual vitamins and minerals, you'll need essential saccharides (glyconutrients) because they are the messenager molecules that direct the action of the immune system and the utilization of all the nutrition necessary for the repair process. The only company that does a supplement with all the eight necessary saccharides is Mannatech. The bad news is that it is an MLM; the good news is that its easy to find a distributor - look at their website: www.mannatech.com. You'll need to take more than the recommended daily amount; try 2 or 3 tsp per day. You can't OD on this stuff, so don't worry if this seems like a lot.
I think the combination of these two would do wonders for you. Good luck.
