The History Channel dedicated a whole show to advanced weapons technologies. Already the military is working with other such weapons. One is a "hypersound" unit that fires a directed beam of sound. This thing is to sound what a laser is to light. It focuses a narrow beam of sound, that appears to be heard inside the head of the person it is aimed at. They intend to use it for crowd control by temporarily deafening and/or making the victims nauseous.

Interestingly, perhaps, the same hypersound technology has been licensed commercially by such people as vending machine manufacturers. They plan to install the units into vending machines, and give them an infrared motion detector to trigger them. As you walk by the Coke machine, you hear the sound of a Coke pouring into a glass of ice...and it sounds like it's coming from inside your own head. Talk about "subliminal" advertising. Whoo....

Is this what you mean? Several of my patients have had episodes in which they were awoke from sleep but were unable to move. And, yes, it was terrifying for them. However, in certain sleep stages, the brain produces chemicals which prevent or limit movement of the major muscle groups. If you awaken during this stage and your body doesn't eliminate the chemical fast enough (for various reasons), then you are awake and can't move.
